Cape May is a quaint town known for romantic bed and breakfasts, museums, and world class birding opportunities, but this charming seaside town also has a thriving live music scene that runs from early afternoon into the late-night hours. Whether you’re after a laid-back acoustic set with a glass of wine, a rooftop show with ocean views, or a full-blown nightclub experience, there’s a venue here to match the mood. From historic hotel bars to working farms and distilleries, music has become woven into the fabric of a Cape May visit. Below is a rundown of ten spots to catch a show, plus one can’t-miss festival that draws music lovers from all over.

Key takeaways:

  • Live music in Cape May spans nearly every time of day, from farm markets at happy hour to nightclubs open past midnight.
  • Several venues host music nightly or almost every day of the week, so it’s easy to build an evening around it no matter when you’re visiting.
  • Genres range widely, including jazz, blues, folk, singer-songwriter, acoustic, and high-energy dueling pianos.
  • Many of the best spots double as wineries, breweries, or distilleries, so you can pair a drink with the show.
  • The Exit Zero Jazz Festival is the crown jewel of the local music calendar, held twice a year with performances across the city.
  1. The Brown Room at Congress Hall. For a classy evening of cocktails and live music, The Brown Room is hard to beat. The space has roots dating back to after Prohibition, when Congress Hall opened a cocktail bar in this very spot. Today it hosts live sets from mid-afternoon through early evening throughout the week, so if you’re hoping to catch music on an otherwise quiet night like a Monday, this could be your answer. Settle into the half-circle bar or sink into a velvet couch for a speakeasy-style atmosphere.
  2. Boiler Room at Congress Hall. The Boiler Room offers a completely different vibe. Billed as an underground pizzeria and nightclub, it serves up brick-oven pizza, cold draft beer, and classic cocktails alongside later-night music that typically kicks off after 9 pm and runs until 1 am. This is the pick for anyone wanting to keep the night going after the sun goes down.
  3. Mad Batter Restaurant and Bar. Located in the heart of historic Cape May, the Mad Batter has been family owned and operated since 1976, making it one of the longest-running restaurants in town. There’s no need to check a schedule here, since live music happens every single evening, with an open mic added into the mix on Sundays.
  4. Barefoot Bar and Restaurant. For live music with a beachfront view, head to the Barefoot Bar at the Marquis De Lafayette Hotel. This open-air beach bar features daily live entertainment, making it a reliable choice whenever you happen to be in town and craving music with sand underfoot.
  5. Harry’s Ocean Bar & Grille. Harry’s holds the distinction of being the only rooftop bar in Cape May, and during the warmer months it’s the place to catch live music with a view. When the weather turns cold or rainy, the party simply moves indoors, so there’s rarely a bad night to visit. The lineup ranges from regional acts and acoustic artists to full bands and even high-energy dueling pianos.
  6. The Cricket Club. One of the newer additions to Cape May’s music scene, having opened in 2022, the Cricket Club is set inside a beautifully renovated Victorian building from the late 1800s, just a half block from the Atlantic Ocean. Live music runs Monday through Saturday, and Sundays bring a Vinyl Night.
  7. Rea’s Farm. It might be an unexpected place to find a concert, but Rea’s Farm combines a farmers market, a local artisan shop, and live music into one stop. From Memorial Day through Halloween, the working farm and market in West Cape May hosts live music every Friday from 5 to 8 pm, making it a great way to kick off the weekend while grabbing a bite to eat.
  8. Cold Spring Brewery. Just a short ten-minute drive outside downtown Cape May, Cold Spring Brewery keeps a full calendar of entertainment, including music, game nights, and fireside chats. Live music takes over on Saturday afternoons, and an open mic runs on Friday evenings. It’s worth the short drive to sip one of the brewery’s house brews while listening to a set.
  9. Cape May Winery and Vineyard. This spot offers live music on Friday afternoons and evenings, as well as Saturday and Sunday afternoons. Expect extra programming in the summer months including a Sunday brunch series with live music, a Summer Grill Night series pairing wine and food with mellow live tunes, and a Friday evening happy hour on the patio.
  10. Nauti Spirits Distillery. Set on a 60-acre farm outside of downtown, Nauti Spirits is a farm distillery producing vodka, gin, rum, and bourbon, and it’s also a hub for live music. Shows run every Friday and Saturday at 6 pm and Sunday at 3 pm, with an open mic on the first and third Thursdays and karaoke on the second Thursday, all at 6 pm. The distillery doesn’t serve food, but food trucks are common and guests are welcome to bring their own picnic. It’s also one of the host venues for the Exit Zero Jazz Festival, and there’s no better way to enjoy a farm sunset than with a drink and a live set.
